When Michelle approached EmployAbilities in Edmonton, she had been unemployed since 2019. Before that, she worked as an Administrative Supervisor for Norwood Child & Family Resource Centre. Michelle had to be hospitalized due to her medical condition. Michelle was let go due to her inability to work for two months, which resulted in difficulties trusting employers.

Success with the Job Development Team

Michelle was well aware of what accommodation she required for work to avoid further medical difficulties; she needed easy access to a washroom and plenty of hydration. Michelle identified that a work-from-home opportunity would be ideal. The Employment Coach supported Michelle in determining job targets that were realistic and attainable in the Edmonton region, writing and editing her resumes/cover letters and assisting her in targeting her resume/cover letter to job postings she applied to. Additionally, she participated in a mock interview and completed the online skills training sessions. The Employment Coach referred Michelle to the Job Development team, where they could discuss job targets more specifically and connect her with employment opportunities.

Landing her Dream Job

Michelle was offered temporary employment with ALIGN Association of Community Services as an Administrative Assistant for three months. Michelle identified that she felt she had found her “dream job.”  After successfully completing and attaining her 3-month probationary period, she was offered a one-year contract.  Her employer told her that she was a great fit and was doing a great job. Michelle’s main duties include taking meeting minutes and writing reports, amongst other administrative tasks.  Michelle continues to be employed.
