Andrew came to EmployAbilities having difficulty securing employment after losing his last job when the doctor he was providing personal tech support for retired.
Andrew met with EmployAbilities at one of the last job fairs before the COVID-19 pandemic. He successfully completed all six EmployAbilities Skills Training Employment Readiness sessions and was ready to work with his Employment Coach and Team to secure a tech support position.
Andrew was extremely specific about what he wanted his Employment Coach to help him with—interviews! He found that he did not have too many difficulties securing interviews. He had put together a well-developed resume and had education, experience, and a passion for tech support.
The problem arose during the interview. Andrew struggled with interview anxiety and had difficulties understanding the nuances behind questions like “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” among others. His Employment Coach began having regular mock interviews with him virtually over Google Meets. They would also debrief shortly after any real interviews. Andrew had to discuss what went well, what could have gone better, and strategies for next time.
After working on his interview skills, he (successfully!) interviewed at London Drugs and now provides personal tech support to their customers. This role has required him to interact with many more people than his previous position. Andrew was excited for the opportunity and gladly accepted. We are happy to report that after 6 months, Andrew has continued working as a tech specialist at London Drugs. He continues to become more comfortable and confident in his role.
