Anthony is a 48-year-old widow who came to EmployAbilities seeking help on how to return to the labour market after being unemployed for 7 years while he was caring for his terminally ill wife. During the intake, he disclosed that he was born with Cerebral Palsy, which affects the movement on the right side of his body. He’s also been in a couple of accidents and reports he walks with a limp. He indicated that he would like strategies to overcome his 7-year unemployment gap and assistance with some career planning.
Anthony worked with his Employment Coach to explore what kinds of positions he would be best suited for. His wide range of experience made him suitable for many positions. His employment coach assisted him in developing targeted resumes and cover letters for positions of interest. They discussed strategies for minimizing the gap on his resume to secure more interviews. Anthony and his Employment Coach also spent time doing mock interviews, as this was an area that needed improvement.
After only a few weeks, Anthony could secure a temporary position with Stats Canada as a survey worker. After completing his temporary position, Anthony accepted an offer to work at Lake Louise as a resort worker. As a condition of Employment, Anthony was required to complete his Alberta Food Safety and Standard First Aid certification. EmployAbilities assisted Anthony in arranging this training, and after successful completion, he was able to start his new position.
Anthony was very pleased to get this position and feels that the work environment is great for his well-being. He’s maintained his position and is enjoying the atmosphere, and he feels that this is what he needs in his life at this time. Way to go, Anthony!
