Starting over in a new country is never easy. For newcomers with disabilities or permanent conditions, the journey to employment can be even more challenging. EmployAbilities’ Newcomers to Canada program can help. This free program offers more than just job search help. It provides a wraparound support system to educate people about the job market, build confidence and lead to meaningful employment in Edmonton.

You’re not alone, and our services are free.

Arriving in a new country can feel isolating, especially for those living with a disability or long-term health condition. Many newcomers in this situation have never had tailored employment support before, or may not even realize it’s available. The EmployAbilities Newcomers to Canada program meets participants where they are. We offer safe, free services in Edmonton to help newcomers with disabilities understand the Canadian job market, gain employability skills and meet new people.

We’ll help you understand your rights.

A common issue newcomers face is not completely understanding their rights when it comes to disabilities and employment in Alberta. Understanding your rights, how to disclose your disability and what supports to ask for can ensure success in the workplace. In addition, sometimes newcomers entering the job force in Alberta are so that if they don’t fully understand the system, they might accept jobs for which they are overqualified. Access to accurate information and being able to ask questions and receive support can prevent that from happening.

Build practical job search and employment skills.

The Newcomers to Canada program offers essential skills development for finding a new job. It includes:

  • Pre-employment training, including communication, time management, teamwork, etc.
  • Resume and cover letter building
  • Job interview coaching
  • Job search support
  • Help to understand what employers expect from you
  • Guidance on how and when to disclose your disability or permanent condition

These are practical tools that help participants rebuild their confidence and see themselves as capable contributors to the workforce.

A fast track to long-term success

The Newcomers to Canada program is quick and straightforward. Depending on your needs, some participants can be done in four hours. This small time commitment can get you on the right path forward regarding employment.
