Five years after issuing a challenge to his fellow mayors to “Do the Right Thing” when it comes to hiring individuals with a disability, Sarnia’s Mike Bradley is at it again, delivering the keynote address at “Informing the Roadmap for Work Disability Policy in Canada” conference in Toronto on Friday.
The event, organized by the Centre for Research ob Work Disability Policy, saw Bradley speak to a gathering of academics, policymakers, injured worker and disability community reps, employment service providers, employers and labour leaders—there to help identify solutions to the unemployment problem for people who have a disability in this country.
Currently people who have a disability make up 16% of the Canadian population, making them one of Canada’s largest “minority” groups with nearly 5.3 million people, equivalent to the combined populations of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Bradley, who has been recognized for his advocacy for the hiring of persons with a disability, took the opportunity to “relaunch” the “Mayor’s Challenge to Hire Persons with a Disability,” but with something of a twist.
Instead of “Doing the Right Thing,” Bradley is now asking his colleagues to “Do the Smart Thing.”
