Robel – An EmployAbilities client at his new job.

Starting something new can feel intimidating, especially when it comes to your career. If you’re thinking about joining an EmployAbilities program or using some of our drop-in job support services, you might be wondering what the process looks like and what kind of support you’ll receive. This blog will share a little information about what to expect from us and how we can help you embark on this next important chapter.

EmployAbilities programs are designed for people with disabilities and barriers to employment, and everything we do is built around respect, understanding, and real-world support. From day one, our goal is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and supported. We want to ensure that you are better equipped to seek, find, and maintain meaningful employment.

An understanding and supportive start

When you first connect with EmployAbilities, you’ll meet with a friendly employment professional who takes the time to get to know you, including your disability and/or barrier to employment. This isn’t a test, it’s a conversation. You’ll talk about your goals, your strengths, and any challenges you’re facing. Together, you’ll decide which program or services are the best fit for you.

Getting to know you ensures we can point you towards the services that will best meet your needs. For some of our specific programs, not everyone is eligible, and some require specific referrals from related agencies. If this is the case and the program you had in mind isn’t going to work, we’ll ensure you get the resources and help you need to take the next step forward.

Personalized support, because there is no one-size-fits-all

Every EmployAbilities program is tailored to the individual. That means your experience will look different from someone else’s. Here are some ways we can help you:

  • One-on-one career coaching
  • Personalized career exploration
  • Help create or improve your resume and cover letter for each application
  • Job search and interview preparation
  • Skills training and workshops, depending on the program
  • Support that respects your pace and your needs
  • Tailored job search help
  • Employer connections

Your employment coach will work with you step by step, helping you build confidence while developing practical job skills.

Support that continues after you’re hired

EmployAbilities doesn’t stop supporting you once you find a job. Many programs include short-term job coaching after you’re hired, so you can settle into your role and succeed. We can help with adjusting, communicating with your employer, or accessing disability-related supports. Many EmployAbilities clients and program participants comment on how they felt supported and part of a community when working with EmployAbilities. We’re here to help you, too.
