EDMONTON – The Edmonton Journal was one of six companies honoured Tuesday with an Employer Award of Distinction from EmployAbilities.
The Journal won the “Community Initiative Award of Distinction” for its leadership role in showcasing and promoting work for people with disabilities.
“We feel we’re ambassadors for our community, and have been for more than 100 years,” said the Journal’s Kelly Baldock.
“We’re proud to be recognized for that role.”
Alberta’s Associate Minister of Services for Persons with Disabilities Frank Oberle joked that it was “too bad” the city’s brand new mayor Don Iveson couldn’t be there.
“This is a cause he’s going to take up — he just doesn’t know it yet.”
Guest speaker Aleem Jaffer received a standing ovation for his witty and poignant recounting of his struggles to find employment.
Other companies honoured included TD Canada Trust, Cowan Imaging Group, Bonnie Doon Bowling Lanes, Sobeys and Dynalife DX.
This month is Alberta Disability Employment Awareness Month.
