“Creating a more accessible workplace is complicated and expensive.” FALSE
Most of the time, simple accommodations and minor changes can remove barriers and help employees do their jobs successfully. Making your workplace more accessible doesn’t have to be a major financial investment. It might feel complicated, but it’s not. Often, workplace accommodations are simple, practical, and affordable.
If you’re ready to make your workplace more inclusive and accessible, here are a few places to start.
Offer Flexible Work Options
Flexible scheduling can make a big difference for employees with disabilities or other barriers. Depending on the position, this might mean adjusting start and end times, allowing additional breaks, or offering remote or hybrid work. Flexibility can also benefit your entire team. Employees may be better able to manage appointments, family responsibilities, transportation, or other needs while still meeting role requirements.
Make Communication Accessible
Clear communication helps everyone understand what is expected of them. Whenever possible, provide important instructions in writing and give employees different ways to receive and share information.
For example, follow up on verbal instructions with an email or written checklist. Make sure digital documents are easy to read and use clear, straightforward language.
These simple practices can help employees stay organized and reduce misunderstandings.
Consider Assistive Technology
Every disability and person is different, and many people with disabilities will not require assistive technology. However, you don’t want to pass up a qualified, skilled employee if they do!
Technology can help employees work more independently and efficiently. Depending on the individual’s needs, this could include screen readers, speech-to-text software, captioning, ergonomic equipment, or other tools. You don’t need to know every available technology. Start by talking with the employee about what would help them perform their essential job duties. EmployAbilities can also help employers explore options and guide them through these conversations.
Create an Inclusive Onboarding Experience
The first few weeks of a new job can be overwhelming. A thoughtful onboarding process can help new employees feel comfortable and confident. Provide clear instructions, introduce employees to their team, explain workplace routines, and give them time to learn their responsibilities. Check in regularly and create an environment that encourages questions.
Most importantly, don’t assume that everyone needs the same type of support. Ask what works for the individual and be willing to adjust.
