If you’re living in Edmonton or the greater Edmonton area and are looking for job training or employment, you can drop into the EmployAbilities Career and Employment Centre. Here’s what your experience with us will look like.

Drop in to determine your eligibility and next steps.

So you’ve discovered EmployAbilities, and you’re ready to seek employment. Congratulations! Your first step is easy. Just drop in at our Edmonton-based EmployAbilities Career and Employment Centre anytime between 8:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday to register as a client. No appointment necessary!

Once you come in, you’ll be asked to fill out some paperwork to determine if you’re eligible for our services.

After we’ve reviewed your documents, our staff will determine if the next step for you is to participate in one of our employment-related programs, or our employment process for job placement. We’ll walk you through the programs and services we offer and if we find a good fit, we’ll refer you to the program head. If we think our employment process is the right direction for you, we’ll register you for our mandatory orientation sessions.

If you’re moving forward to a recommended program, see Programs below to look at your next step.

If you’re registered for orientation sessions, see Orientation below to follow your next steps.

Get started in a program to grow your job skills.

Once we’ve determined which program is best suited for you, we’ll get you in touch with the program head for further instruction. The process for each program is different, but they’ll lead you though each step.

Complete eight training sessions to build your job skills and prepare for the workplace.

We want to make sure that you start your job search prepared and equipped with knowledge that will set you up for success. That’s why before we help you look for employment, we guide you through our eight-session orientation series, designed to provide a firm foundation for your job search.

Sessions run from 10:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Monday through Thursday. To make sure you’re prepared for the training sessions, we’ve made the first orientation session mandatory. It lays the groundwork for all of the following sessions.

Monday’s session must be completed before you can move forward in the orientation process, but you can complete the following sessions in any order and at your own pace. Just keep in mind that you have to finish all eight sessions to move onto the next step of our employment process: getting assigned an employment coach.

Employment Coaching

Create an action plan and determine which services are best to guide your job search.

Now that you’ve gone through the orientation sessions, you’re ready to meet your employment coach! Expect a call from them, and you two will work together to set up your first meeting.

During your first meeting, your employment coach will ask you some “get to know you” questions, kind of like an interview, so they can get a good idea of who you are and your employment goals.

Together, you’ll create an action plan to work towards your employment goals. Turning those goals into reality takes some time and effort, and will require meetings with your employment coach to get there. As we help you along the employment process, we ask that you fully participate in the activities your employment coach gives you, so we can work together to achieve your goals.

Once your employment coach sees you’re ready to move forward, you’ll advance to the next stage of our employment process.

Job Search

Together, we’ll seek out job leads, submit applications, contact employers, and prepare for interviews.

In this next stage of our employment process, you’ll be introduced to our Job Development Team (JDT) who will work with you and your employment coach going forward. The JDT will review your employment goals with you and help find a realistic job target.

Next, your employment coach and the team will look for job leads that align with your goals, reach out to potential employers for you, and search for a position where you can thrive.

As we’re actively helping you find employment, you’ll also be given the support to follow your action plan. You’ll participate by submitting resumes and online applications, contacting employers directly, and preparing for your interviews. The more time and effort you devote to your own job searching process, the quicker you’ll find employment. Our goal is to support you on your employment journey.

Your employment coach will stay in touch with you and your employer, providing support.

Congratulations on your new job! Now that you’re employed, we want to continue to work with you and your employer. Your employment coach will keep in touch with both of you as needed to make sure you’re feeling comfortable and progressing in your position.
