Shawna joined the EmployAbilities Grande Prairie program in the spring of 2023. While in the program, Shawna demonstrated that she was kind, hardworking, and goal-oriented, consistently planning for her future career ambitions. She lived with a hearing impairment and was having a hard time finding an employer who could provide an accommodating work environment. Throughout her time in the program, staff observed Shawna develop her skills, broaden her job targets, and expand her knowledge of the labour market in the region.

With assistance from EmployAbilities Grande Prairie employer connections, Shawna secured an interview with Wesco Distribution for a Warehouse Associate role. She impressed the employer and was offered a temporary role that could become full-time permanent if she did well.

EAGP staff helped Shawna purchase steel-toed footwear, complete employment paperwork, and receive funding to receive her forklift certification so that she would be ready for her new role.

Shawna quickly impressed her employer with her work performance and quick ability to learn. During the 30-, 60-, and 90-day follow-ups, Wesco expressed to EAGP that Shawna’s work performance was great. Shawna also reported that she was enjoying her job and fit in well with the work environment. A couple of months later, Wesco offered Shawna a permanent full-time employment, and she accepted the offer.

Shawna is still employed by Wesco and doing very well. She has ambitions to continue her career growth within the company. Shawna is expanding in her role and learning more skills, and she is a great asset to the workplace. We at EAGP are grateful to have watched Shawna grow, thrive, and develop her new career.
