Job Titles Aren’t That Important

  • A recent CareerBuilder study of more than 2,000 companies in the U.S found that 55% of hiring managers who have job openings for which they can‚Äôt find qualified candidates stated that they usually hire people who have held the same title as the open position.¬† Hiring managers who are looking at previous job titles are actually limiting the field of candidates and could be the cause of their own hiring woes.

    This article by Matt Ferguson, the CEO of CareerBuilder, suggests that hiring managers should focus on finding the similarity between candidates previous occupations based on knowledge, skills and abilities they require.  By setting their criteria too high they might be overlooking many quality applicants, leaving the position vacant for extended periods of time.
